Leviathan was written during the English Civil war; much of the book is occupied with demonstrating the necessity of a strong central authority to avoid the evil of discord and civil war. Any abuses of power by this authority are to be accepted as the price of peace. In particular, the doctrine of separation of powers is rejected: the sovereign must control civil, military, judicial and ecclesiastical powers.

For the Term of His Natural Life (1874)-

Follow the fortunes of Rufus Dawes, a young man transported to Australia for a murder he did not commit.

The tale revolves around two storylines: the story of Jesus and the story of Ben-Hur. The author supposedly was engaging in a discussion with an atheist over the existence of God when he discovered how little he knew about the actual historical setting of the Messianic events. He set to work, and after a season of research, turned up with the book, his primary purpose being to teach.

Two Years Before the Mast (1840)

Sailing to California from Boston around Cape Horn, Two Years Before the Mast is both an adventure and an eloquent account of life at sea in the early nineteenth century. Richard Henry Dana is only nineteen when he escapes the patrician world of Boston and Harvard for the arduous voyage. The result is an astonishing book, filled with vivid descriptions of storms, whales, and the ship's mad captain, terrible hardship and magical beauty, and fascinating historical detail.

Moll Flanders (1722)

Who was Born in Newgate, and during a Life of continu'd Variety for Threescore Years, besides her Childhood, was Twelve Year a Whore, five times a Wife (whereof once to her own Brother), Twelve Year a Thief, Eight Year a Transported Felon in Virginia, at last grew Rich, liv'd Honest, and dies a Penitent. Written from her own Memorandums . . .
